Coming of Age

Last year I started this mini-project of assigning an anthem for each year since I started to really identify with - and define myself through - music. I used the tag #coming of age, and named my anthem for 2010. Then went back and named a song for each year I was in high school (2000-2004). For no particular reason, I stopped at that point and never got back to filling in the rest of the years. In light of the year I’ve had, I decided to rekindle it.

I am going to start with 2011, then recap my college years and up through 2009. The unique thing for 2011 - as well as all four years I was in college - is that they are all split in half by definitive moments. As a result they’ve each got two songs instead of one. The criteria for choosing the year’s anthem is that it had to have been a significant song in my life at that time, as well as one that best reflects where and who I was.

Here’s a brief recap of where I am so far:

2000: Guster “Two Points For Honesty”
2001: Stabbing Westward “Darkest Days”
2002: Boy Hits Car “A Letter From Prison”
2003: Finch “Untitled”
2004: Smile Empty Soul “Nowhere Kids”

2010: The Limousines “The Future”

As my friend Eden posted around the time I originally started this: “the answer to the most unanswerable question can usually be found in song.“
