I just finished reading Hard Boiled, written by Frank Miller and art by Geof Darrow. It was overall a pretty big disappointment. The storyline was alright, but it’s one I feel like I’ve seen too many times before. None of the characters were memorable. The biggest let down here was the artwork - both the penciling and coloring. Half of the time I could barely tell what I was looking at. There were also a few too many full paged panels, and I felt that it took away from the effectiveness of using the full page.
Recently, I noticed that I seem to like the vast majority of the books I read. The same could be said for movies I watch. I was concerned that perhaps I was not being critical enough of the medium I prefer to work in. I realize now that it’s more a matter of my choosing to read and watch things that I already know I am going to like. I tend to only read books after they’ve been recommended by multiple people. And that’s why reads like this are so disappointing; I had high expectations.
Either way, it’s healthy for me to identify what I do and don’t like. I need to understand both in order to improve my own work.
